The term used as the title of the workshop organized in Milan, Italy, September 22-23, 1986, "Anxious Depression: Assessment and Treatment," is not included in the most recent nosographic categories. However, it was chosen in order to emphasize the frequency of coexistence of anxiety and depression in the same subject. The meeting on which this volume is based was organized with an educational grant from The Upjohn Company. We extend our thanks to everyone who cooperated with the organization of the meeting and with the publication of this volume, in particular Dr. Luciano Manzone, for his scientific contribution to the meeting.
